I know what you’re thinking – Social Media Strategists get to do the coolest things; they must get the most interesting e-mails. Well, the most exciting e-mail I’ve ever received contained nothing but a link:

Headline: Should we go to this?

How could any tech-obsessed compulsive Twitter/Facebook/Mashable-checking Social Media Strategist say “no” to going to South by Southwest Interactive (a digital media conference)?

Message: YES!!

We were put to the test right away with a request for a presentation about why we should go. So we outlined all the benefits of going to SXSW – what we would do to prepare for the festival and our plans during. We must have rocked the pitch because the tickets were booked, and now we’re T-2 days away from what I’m sure will be an amazing week in Austin, TX. Now it’s time to share with the world the top reasons to go to SXSWi, according to Honkfish:

Networking

SXSWi is an expensive festival and the main reason is because it’s such an awesome networking opportunity. Don’t believe me? Just take a look at the SXSWi schedule, speakers, and panels. With over 200 panels and events there is a learning opportunity around every corner. You get to connect with your peers, meet the experts, participate in the community, and recharge your creativity all in one place.

Social Media/Tech Ed

Many companies put on events and unveil new products or features at SXSWi. There’s always a buzz about which company will be the most talked about each year at the festival. You’re also exposed to new trends, which include everything from social media to tech to design to web development. Being surrounded by innovation keeps you up to date on where your business is going and how to get there in style.

The Experience

I believe that your personal social media equity increases after having been to SXSW. This is because you meet with other leaders in the industry and, as mentioned above, are exposed to new trends and products. Also, going to SXSWi inspires passion. It’s addicting being around others who are enthusiastic about the same things as you. For an agency, passion is incredibly important since hard work, creativity, and thought leadership all stem from it.

Global Perspective

Despite advances in global connectivity many social media folks have cutting edge ideas when they start out but are left stuck in a bubble after only a few months. This happens because social media and technology move so fast that within a blink of an eye the platform you’ve spent months working on is no longer “in.” Simply put, if you’re not constantly exposing yourself to different conferences, festivals, meetups, and people in the industry you’ll struggle to stay on top.

Healthy Appetite

And of course there’s the food. So, if anyone who has favorite places to grab grub in Austin, please share your suggestions!

Lastly, connect with us before, during, and after the festival. Scientific, non-biased studies have found that we’re awesome!
