Many people remember the “soft” launch of Foursquare earlier on this year with the official launch being around mid March with SXSW. Que the car screetching to a halt only to slam headfirst into an obstacle. Ask many “social media gurus” and they probably won’t be able to tell you when Twitter launched, let alone the exact month. This is due to the fact that many of these services require a lot of traction to get themselves in front of Oprah and therefore, the world. How do you, the business owner, social media lover, consultant, etc decide which up and coming platform is going to hit it big?

I frequently get this question from clients and really the answer needs to come from within. If you are spending the “correct” amount of time in the space, you should be seeing these home runs from the nose bleed section of the stadium…two innings before they occur. People love to poke fun at the fact that I spend “all day on Facebook.” Just scratch out Facebook and replace it with research and you would have hit a nail, right on the head. This is really how long it takes to stay 100% ahead of the social media curve. Here are a few simple ways to stay abreast on current social media trends and general information.

Blogs

  1. Mashable: One of the very best.
  2. Social Media Examiner: SME has a very distinct art style but well worth the content.

Twitter

  1. @brett: Brett Petersel on everything social media.
  2. @garyvee: The one and only brand mechanic.
  3. @tedmurphy: The…tongue behind Izea.

Buzz

  1. Jason Calacanis: One of the fathers of blogging.
  2. Leo Laporte: The macdaddy of podcasting.
