Does anyone remember that Twitter has a small feature known as the “Direct Message?” This little known feature is often times forgotten until you start following people. After 10 or 20 follows you end up with 10…or 20 direct messages in your inbox. Most of these items come from a service known as socialOomph. So why exactly is this an issue?

First off, your automatic direct message has no feeling, emotions, or caring behind it. It is, by all means, a message with no heart or thought. If you don’t actually care about me following your updates, why would I care about what you are selling through your DM?

If you feel the need to send some type of “thank you for following me” message (and this is not needed by the way) after I follow you, feel free to @ tag me and tailor the tweet to my attitude. Care for each and everyone who follows you, learn about them and interact with them regularly…why? Because it shows you care about all of your customers, both past and future and that is what matters in this space.

Oh and don’t forget to use DM when you want to keep a conversation private because the feature is still useful.
