How does one effectively deliver meaningful content in a world literally inundated with ADHD? Is it through pictures and rich multimedia that ensnare the reader into believing that they were actually there or is it something yet to be discovered? Podcasting / Netcasting / Internet Radio is a fascinating foray into this realm of multimedia immersion, and although fun to produce, it is largely a misunderstood medium.

Podcasting is a wonderful method to convey your expertise without actually having to write out long form blog posts. Certain people are much more eloquent with their words through speech as apposed to written form. You know that your heart is set in the realm of podcasting, how do you compete in this already crowded space (Podcast Alley currently indexes over 82k podcasts and 5 million podcast episodes)?

  1. Have an opinion AND a voice. No one wants to listen to a monotone robot who folds whenever someone opposes their beliefs. These two attribute will prove to your community that you are both passionate and informative on a specific subject. However, if your cohost or a guest trumps you know how to show some humility and admit when you are wrong.
  2. Listen to each and every episode you produce. This might seem narcissistic in nature; however, how are you going to learn what works in the podcast and what doesn’t? Always strive to make your show more engaging and exciting for your listeners.
  3. Know and understand the Long Tail. Make your distribution channels numerous enough so that there is zero friction for your consumer. Although you may have low downloads or demand, you still might be rivaling the bigger boys in the game, but certainly not at day 1.

Trust me podcasting is no “walk in the park.” Even though these forms of content can be great for your brand, (personal or not) they take a long time to establish a fair amount of traction. The most important thing? Have fun, stay foolish, and love on your community.
